We have to admit that the hybrid vehicles up until now had to sacrifice performance properties, such as comfortable driving and acceleration performance, since environmentally friendly aspects – the reduction in gas emission in accordance with the decrease in fuel – were given priority. However, Hyundai Automobile is aiming at adding new value that surpasses the “eco-friendly aspect” in a hybrid vehicle with the introduction of the Sonata Hybrid early this year, which integrates all new technologies related to environmentally friendly vehicles. The new values are “safety” and “high performance”.

The showcase demonstration, “Trust Hybrid Tech & Safety”, which was held in March 2015 at a battery test site in Chungju and a safety test site at Namyang R&D center, was truly an opportunity to demonstrate the safety and performance of the hybrid car. During this demonstration session, which was attended by automobile bloggers and reporters, the safety of the Sonata Hybrid was confirmed through a rear end collision test, dispelling any worries that during a rear-end collision accident the vehicle would explode or burn due to the battery located at the bottom of the trunk compartment. In addition, in the mock-up tests for submersion and collision, the battery was tested and found to be completely safe and without the risk of any sort of explosion.

The secret behind the hybrid that “drives fast”, which has fully demonstrated by Sonata Hybrid, is the “parallel-hard type hybrid system”, which has been exclusively developed by Hyundai Automobile. Unlike the previously used complex type system, the parallel type system realizes engine performance in a straight series system, displaying an absolute advantage in fuel economy during acceleration. Especially, by featuring an engine clutch that controls engine and motor power and the hybrid-exclusive 6 speed automatic transmission, the system enables maximization of efficiency with its simple structure and low motor capacity, completing the driving performance.

Another secret behind the “well performing hybrid” is the hybrid-exclusive DI engine. Featuring the Nu 2.0 Hybrid exclusive engine, which promotes engine efficiency through a direct injection (DI) engine, Sonata Hybrid has obtained 4% higher output of 156 horsepower and 5.5% higher power of 19.3kgm torque. In addition to this, perfecting the strong driving capacity with 8.6% higher output of electric power and 20.9kgm of highest torque, the vehicle has resolved problems regarding initial acceleration, which was thought to be the biggest shortcoming in a hybrid car.

The six speed automatic transmission for Hyundai Motor’s hybrid and plugged-in hybrid vehicles displays a different structure from the transmission in general cars. While previous transmissions delivered the engine-generated power in proportion to the required speed for driving, the hybrid and plugged-in hybrid vehicle exclusive transmission has the transmission and motor combined together in a new housing unit in order to minimize machine movement, as well as output power. In addition, the Electric Oil Pump (EOP) adjusts the oil volume needed for the motor rotation frequency, controlling the optimal oil flow rate within the transmission. The one-bodied structure of the six transmission motor is as light as 130 kg, contributing greatly to enhanced fuel consumption.
