LEE BUL

The <MMCA Hyundai Motor Series> is a long term exhibition series for leading Korean artists presented in partnership with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. The first artist for the series was Lee Bul (South Korea, 1964). Lee received global recognition through her Cyborgs Series, and she is currently one of the world's leading contemporary artists.

Lee Bul has been presented in many prestigious venues around the world, including the MOMA, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, the Guggenheim Museum, Centre Georges Pompidou, and the Tokyo Mori Art Museum, and she has also been part of the Venice Biennale. She presented two large-scale works for the very first time through the <MMCA Hyundai Motor Series 2014: LEE BUL>. Through these works following her <Mon Grand Récit> series, Lee Bul explored the oppressive relationship between the humans and the gloomy future of science and technology. Audiences were offered to witness a stunning highlight of contemporary art with this exhibition.

<Civitas Solis II>

<Civitas Solis II> was a large installation that filled the 33m long, 18m wide, and 7m tall space. The installation transformed the exhibition space into a magnificent mirror labyrinth of refractions and reflections. Inspired by Italian philosopher Campanella’s <Civitas Solis>, Lee Bul allowed the audience to explore between time and space within the infinitely extending space. In the mysterious sense of time and space, the viewers could also experience entering their own inner world of imagination and ego.

<Aubade III> image

<Aubade III>

<AubadeⅢ> is an overarching illumination tower erected upon inspirations found from symbolic icons in modernism such as Bruno Taut’s Monument des Neuen Gesetzes(1919) and the Hindenburg airship. The 15 meters tall light tower created a fog, turning the space into a stage full of drama. The fog which filled up the entire space and vanished in time, generated complex multilayered meaning, taking further the depth and weight of the work. The title of the work, which conveys a contemporary reinterpretation on a love poem that was popular in the Middle Ages Europe, expands the meaning of beauty of life and the inevitable human death.
