Highlight #3: The artists in Europe and the art fair in Asia

Major exhibitions across Moscow, Cologne, Basel and Singapore

Russia, MOSCOW <SALVADOR DALI AND MEDIA>

30 October 2014 ~ 1 February 2015_Moscow Museum of Modern Art

Salvador Dalí, one of the most provocative and imaginative artists of 20th-century art, is being celebrated for the first time with a solo exhibition in Russia. Dali’s works are often divided into periods that relate to the geopolitical situation in the world. However, the exhibition is not arranged in typical chronological order. Instead, visitors are encouraged to make their own path inside the show, from within a context of media. Uniquely, the exhibition includes magazine covers, articles, and other publications that introduce the artist as an illustrator and also art director

The selection delineates the role of the Fourth Estate, and although the artist closely collaborated with media, it is a topic that has seldom been covered, save for the 2004 exhibition at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia. The Moscow show also coincides with Dalí’s 110th birthday.

Germany, COLOGNE <LUDWIG GOES POP>

2 October 2014 ~ 11 January 2015_Museum Ludwig

As one of leading figures of British pop art, Richard Hamilton once handpicked a selection of keywords with which to describe his work: popular, mass-produced, expendable, cheap, witty, sexy, playful, conspicuous and seductive. These terms also perfectly capture the larger sense of pop art, a fact that is explored in this exhibition. The show provides viewers the opportunity to experience the movement as an expression of modern attitudes toward life. The Museum Ludwig is known for its significant collections of American and British pop art, which often uses imagery and text taken from advertising, comics and other mass media.

The exhibition will bring together for the first time more than 150 major works created by the movement’s key artists. It is a rare opportunity to see art by Jasper Jones, Robert Indiana, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist and Andy Warhol.

Switzerland, BASEL <PETER DOIG>

23 November 2014 ~ 22 March 2015_The Fondation Beyeler

Peter Doig, one of the most renowned living figurative painters, is having a solo show at the Fondation Beyeler in Basel. He is known as a master of a wide range of techniques and his work often depicts people in nameless landscapes. The landscape motifs are mostly taken from the scenery of Trinidad and snowy expanses of Canada, where he lived in his early life. The settings he paints are mysterious, exotic, melancholic and alluring. The eye-catching visuals are captured in intense colors and luminosity.

He uses a combination of private pictorial materials, found objects and fragments from contemporary life in his large-scale work. The elements can range from photographs, newspaper clippings, movie scenes, pictures of album covers and film posters. One exhibition highlight is a new mural the artist painted in collaboration with his student, painted on the stage of the exhibition venue’s lower floor.
