Art vacance to Le Puy-Sainte-Reparade, Berlin, and Santander

France, Le Puy-Sainte-Reparade <SEAN SCULLY_DIFFERENT PLACES, CHÂTEAU LA COSTE, FRANCE>
5 July ~ 31 October 2015_ Chateau la Coste
This exhibition presents a selection of key outdoor sculptures and paintings by artist Sean Scully. Born in Dublin, Scully has been nominated for the Turner Prize twice and currently works and lives in the United States. He is most well-known for his textured, abstract oil paintings. Thirteen oil paintings from 2002 to the present are featured alongside drawings, watercolors and sculptures. For those who associate Scully with painting, it is a wonderful introduction to his other works. His massive three-dimensional pieces immediately capture the eyes for its scale and craftsmanship.
The subjects in both his sculpture and painting work contain natural elements and stretches of landscapes. The exhibition offers almost an indirect experience of a vacation in a beautiful town in France, as implied in the title of the show. Connecting works of art to breathtaking sceneries, Scully brings nature into the museum.

Germany, Berlin <EXHIBITING KOREA>
25 June ~ 18 October 2015_ Humboldt Lab Dahlem, Museum fürAsiatischeKunst
A new show in Germany is featuring the works of five Korean artists: Sung Min Hwa, Jae Yong Rhee, Inhwan Oh, Meekyoung Shin and Jae-Eun Choi.
In downtown Berlin, all the art museums can be found in the “Museum Island” area of the Mitte district. But before moving to Mitte in 2019, the Museum fürAsiatischeKunst has invited a selection of artists to share their fresh perspectives on the Korean collection. The exhibition begins with a question posed by the curator Uta Rahman-Steinert: “Can the traditional art museum break free from the image of conventional folklore and traditional culture to create a new space, while still showing works that capture authenticity?”
In response, artists who work in various mediums met and reinterpreted traditional Korean art with modern views and understanding. The exhibition presents drawings by Berlin-based artist MinhwaSung, a photography series by Jaeyong Rhee, video by Inhwan Oh, delicate soap-made ceramic sculptures by Meekyoung Shin, and works by Jaeeun Choi, who replicates the 18th-century Woman at Yeondang by the master Joseon Dynasty painter Shin Yun-bok.
This exhibition is an opportunity for Korean traditions to be newly recognized. It provides an introduction to artists who engage traditional art from the perspective of the contemporary.

Spain, Santander <SOL LEWITT_17 WALL DRAWINGS 1970-2015>
18 July 2015 ~ 10 January 2016_Botín Foundation
Sol LeWitt’s exquisite drawings adorn this exhibition hall with massive scale and vivid colors. A founding member of Conceptual Art and Minimalism, LeWitt is known for his theoretical principles and simplistic lines and forms. The 17 pieces on view epitomize the artist’s prioritization of the creative process in line with his belief that “the idea is the machine that makes the work of art.”
Though varied in shape, size and palette, the drawings are consistent in style. The artist developed a mathematical method of drawing that was applied to all of his works, which resulted in a graphic design-like aesthetic. Geometric figures are layered to build intriguing patterns, and given interest in diversity of medium, ranging from color pencil to graphite and India ink.
For those who would like to witness LeWitt’s timeless works of art and become familiar with his concepts, this show also provides access to supplementary publications and prints. Come explore the form and meaning of Conceptual Art and Minimalism. ■ with ARTINPOST
